A Use of Space: The Unintended Messages of Academic Library Web Sites

Academic library home pages are not only access points to the resources and services of a library, they are virtual representations of the library itself. The content placed on the page, where it is placed, and the amount of space allotted are all choices that send a message about the character of the library, the resources a user should start with, and the library's attitude toward its users. This study explores the messages being sent by the content selection and design of the home pages of 49 of the 50 largest academic libraries in the United States. By looking at the area allocated to different content types and the number and location of different content types, the researchers discovered that design elements and promotion/public relations receive a large amount of page space. The researchers also identified the prominently positioned multi-search box as the apparent de facto standard access point to library resources. Many sites are clearly designed to direct users to specific, presumably important resources. Other sites are more obscure in their site structure and design, increasing the options and visual clutter for users without providing much guidance.  相似文献   

LibGuides and Web-Based Library Guides in Comparison: Is There a Pedagogical Advantage?

This study investigates whether the platform used to deliver a tutorial matters in online information literacy instruction and assesses the overall quality of an information literacy tutorial assignment given to an undergraduate survey class. The study asks whether there is any pedagogical advantage between information literacy tutorials created in the LibGuides library guide creation software and tutorials created as Web pages. This research question is relevant to current studies of online information literacy tutorials, particularly given the increasingly dominant but under-researched position of LibGuides in the academic library world for delivering guides and tutorials. Two separate groups of students completed LibGuides and Web page versions of the same information literacy tutorial assignment in a university undergraduate communication course. Survey results of these 89 students indicated that both the LibGuides and Web page platforms deliver online instruction content effectively and achieve learning objectives almost equally well. Results also indicated content areas within the assignment that could be strengthened.  相似文献

This article considers two components identified as essential to effective academic library Websites-satisfaction of user needs and adherence to university Website guidelines-and how they sometimes contradict one another. A literature review is provided, followed by results of a survey the author created and distributed that measures a librarian's perception of his/her school's Web-administration scenario. 一种基于碎片化页面元素的网站集群构建模型

随着信息化社会的发展,网站集群建设日渐普遍,集群内网站页面更新也逐渐加快,从而导致网站集群维护成本升高,甚至制约了企事业单位信息化的发展。针对该问题,提出一种基于页面基础元素构建多版本网站集群的模型,该模型基于页面结构、单元块及其它页面基础元素动态组合构建页面模板,实现页面元素复用与快捷变更;通过网站版本管控,实现网站多状态快捷切换;将网站版本与栏目信息及模板整合,实现站内多版本页面内容复用与批量更新。实践结果表明,基于该模型的内容管理系统能够快捷应对页面频繁变更和网站多版本切换,实现页面基础元素和页面模板的高效复用与更新。  相似文献   

论网页与界面设计中艺术的运用

随着时代的发展．网站建设越来越接近于一门艺术而不仅仅是一项技术。网页的艺术设计,日益被网站建设者所注重。在目前国内对此领域研究甚少的情况下,作者将网页艺术设计与其他艺术设计形式进行比较,尝试从网页艺术设计的内容、原则和特点三个方面,对这个新的艺术设计领域进行初步的归纳总结和理论探讨。作者认为网页艺术设计是艺术与技术的高度统一。网页艺术设计包含视听元素与版式设计两项内容：以主题鲜明、形式与内容相统一、强调整体为设计原则;具有交互性与持续性、多维性、综合性、版式的不可控性、艺术与技术结合的紧密性五个特点。明确了“美”和“功能”都是为了更好地表达网站主题这一观点。  相似文献

Previously we have designed and implemented new image browsing facilities to support effective offline image contents on mobile devices with limited capabilities: low bandwidth, small display, and slow processing. In this letter, we fulfill the automatic production of cartoon contents fitting small-screen display, and introduce a clustering method useful for various types of cartoon images as a prerequisite stage for preserving semantic meaning. The usage of neural networks is to properly cut the various forms of pages. Texture information that is useful for grayscale image segmentation gives us a good clue for page layout analysis using the multilayer perceptron (MLP) based x-y recursive algorithm. We also automatically frame the segment MLP using agglomerative segmentation. Our experimental results show that the combined approaches yield good results of segmentation for several cartoons.  相似文献

为了降低科技期刊彩色图版的制作印刷成本,调动广大作者多发彩图的积极性以提高刊物的出版质量,利用折叠法对10印张20印刷面上的页码进行了统计,对照所统计的各印刷面上的页码分布,采用本文提出的组版方法——合并法和移动法对有关文献中的双印刷面彩色图版例子进行了重新组版分析。结果显示,合理地将彩色图版安排调整到同一印刷面,减少印刷面的版数,是降低科技期刊彩色图版出版成本的有效方法。  相似文献

基于CFS-GA特征选择算法的中文网页自动分类

为在中文网页分类时降低特征向量的维度、提高分类的精度,采用一种基于关联的特征选择(Correlation-based Feature Selection,CFS)与遗传算法(Genetic Algorithm,GA)相结合的方法进行特征选择.在该算法中,特征子集被当作GA中的一个染色体进行二进制编码;利用CFS启发值作为GA的适应度函数对个体进行评价;CFS值越大的个体遗传到下一代的概率越大.结合GA的全局搜索特性,该算法可保证所得特征子集是全局最优的.利用weka平台,对搜狗实验室提供的中文网页数据集进行实验.结果表明,该算法能有效降低特征空间的维度、提高分类精度。  相似文献
